Andretti Autosport’s attempt to join Formula 1 is gaining steam.

The team announced on Thursday that it has had two days with its F1 partner, Cadillac. Cadillac would provide Andretti’s potential team with engines. F1’s current engine manufacturers are Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull with Honda engines selected.

“We continue to grow Andretti Global and its family of racing teams and we always have our eyes on the next,” Michael Andretti said in a statement. “I feel that we are well suited as a new team to Formula One and that we can bring the series and our partners, as well as excitement to the fans. I am proud to have GM and Cadillac together as we pursue this goal. GM and Andretti share a legacy born from the love of racing. Now we have the opportunity to combine motorsports passion and dedication to innovation to build a true American F1 bid.”

The move to partner with Cadillac for its F1 bid comes after Andretti recently announced a partnership with Wayne Taylor Racing in IMSA. WTR was formerly the field of Cadillacs in IMSA, now the field of Acuras.

If the bid is successful, Formula 1 could have three new manufacturers in the series next season. Audi and Porsche enter F1 in 2016.

Andretti Autosport’s interest in Formula 1 has been no secret in recent years and could be made easier given F1’s interest in new teams. There are now 10 teams making up 20 spots on the F1 grid and the FIA has recently signaled an opening to adding more teams to the previous series.

In the name of Andretti, no stranger to F 1 . Mario Andretti is a former F1 champion and Michael also competed in 13 F1 races in 1993. The team is currently most prominent in the IndyCar Series, where it has four teams. But recently he worked for Andretti Autosport. Alexander Rossi and Colton Herta won each other as one race in 2022 and Rossi was the top Andretti driver in eighth place.

If Andretti gets an F1 team, it is reasonable to believe that Herta would be a strong candidate to move from IndyCar to F1. The 21-year-old has seven wins in 65 IndyCar Series starts.

Haas F1 is now the only American F1 team as the series has exploded in popularity in the United States due to the “Drivers to Survive” docu-series. F1 added a second race in the US in 2022 in Miami and there will be three races in the United States in 2023, including the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
