IndyCar Road America start times: The NTT IndyCar Road Series will return to America with two women on the field for the first time in more than eight years.
With Tatiana Calderon (who runs road and street racing for AJ Foyt Racing this season) joining Simona de Sylvester in Paretta Autosport’s entry, Sonsio’s Grand Prix will mark the first IndyCar race with many female drivers since 2013. finale (which was joining Pippa Mann and Sylvester)
“I’m super happy to see another female driver unifying hurdles to see women in motorsport,” said Calderon. “I think it’s great for the series, great for the sport. The other sports competition is joining a sports competition that is already quite competitive. Yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing Simona compete against this weekend and in the next two rounds.”
It has been a long journey for Silvestro, who was 13th in points for the Houston Rockets last season and finished second in a career-best season in 2013.
Since then Sylvester has started in Formula E, sports cars and has worked in Australia’s Supercars series.
Apart from the three beginning in 2015 with Andretti Autosport, Sylvester was largely absent from the IndyCar until he returned to the Indy 500 last year with Paretta.
The road to America will be the first of three hours that this year begins with Sylvester also race in Mid-Ohio and Nashville with Paretta Autosport. A year after being shared with Team Penske, the team owned by Beth Paretta (which is primarily comprised of women in leading positions) formed a technical partnership with Ed Carpenter Racing.
“I think the next seven years I’ve always tried to get back to IndyCar,” said de Silvestro, who ran a full-time IndyCar from the year 2011-13. “But the struggle, the honorable, to get the seat. He tries really hard to make what I think IndyCar is extremely special, and that’s what really fits me where I really wanted to race.
“(Paretta) is putting together this program, especially now with multiple races doing it, I think it’s a really big step forward, and I hope we can really build on it and be fully capable. I’m super pumped. She is a wonderful person. I wouldn’t be here without her. All the women who I think it’s implicit, we’re really pretty grateful for her fighting for this.
Although the women’s IndyCar races have become declining in recent years, Sylvester and Calderon develop into the future.
“If you look at the junior series, I think it’s much more common for women to see women than I think is really positive,” said de Silvestro. “But certainly, the top two in the series, I think I could encourage even more girls to send out and do all that. I think it’s really important to be able to compete in IndyCar.”
While growing up in Columbia, Calderon said he rooted for Silvestro, Danica Patricio and Bia Figueiredo.
“It’s a shame the last couple of years have had a long time because we haven’t (female) ranked in the top single seaters,” Calderon, 29, said. “I think you’ll see that sometimes I believe it, because at the young age I want to say it’s an IndyCar, because there are women who can compete against the men in a champion championship.
“I hope at the same time I’m able to keep that momentum going and see more women beginning, even in single seaters, because that’s what we need in the end. It’s a group that connects us with more and more hope in the future, and as long as we can stay and represent women as much as possible.”
Before he died at the age of nine in IndyCar, Sylvester noted that he had performed in front of Joseph Newgarden, who would sign with Penske a few years later and would catch two balls.
“In 2013 I was in the top class where I was,” he said. “I really competed up front in IndyCar. To be honest, I haven’t had a chance to get into a bigger team. I think it’s still something to compete with. I think if we can be really competitive, I think things have changed a lot in the last 10 years, maybe that’s a sense of more risk for those willing to take it. I think some work is in progress.
“I think there’s still a need to approve each weekend before being able to run and get those results. Hopefully it inspires even more opportunities for women to be at the top level in running.”
Calderon said: “We need more opportunities for more beginners and more women. It is long. I think it has been changed, but we don’t want to change that speed.
“I think it’s still a great opportunity to work. Look at Formula 1 as well, when a woman wants to be in 45 years, right? In Formula 2 there haven’t been that many. There are still more opportunities at all levels, not just as directors. I definitely see more men and to want more women collectors to give us opportunities. I hope we’ll see them in the coming years. But it’s a long process.
Corporate support is needed.
“There’s a lot of interest in running a fixed amount of money,” de Silvestro said. “If you have sponsors who really help teams who also really want to see you happy, I really think those things push us forward.
“In the end you need to get the right throw, you need to really want to support your people behind you. I think we get opportunities as a woman driver, but I also think sometimes that being really quick is when we get some bad time giving up.
